Joliet and Naperville Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure with the potential for a big payoff with minimal risk and trauma. It's similar to a facelift in that regard, and, in fact, the two procedures are often performed together.

If you're like most people, from time to time you've noticed bags or puffiness under your eyes. But perhaps you're now realizing that those pouches are always there, whether you're actually feeling tired or not. And, when you look more closely, your upper eyelids are droopy too.

Is Eyelid Surgery for Me?

You may be a good candidate if:
  • You're generally satisfied with your appearance
  • You'd like to get rid of bags and droopiness around the eyes
  • Your skin tone is reasonably good
  • You're healthy and don't smoke

Like any other part of the body, our eyes show the signs of aging. Unlike some other parts of the body, it's not easy to disguise unattractive areas around the eyes. Makeup can even out skin tone but it doesn't easily hide puffy skin. And applying makeup to the eyelids can be useless if they are hidden beneath folds and creases.

When you imagine yourself with wide open eyes surrounded by fresh looking skin, it's easy to understand why eyelid surgery is rapidly becoming one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S.

Dr. Rios will show you how eyelid surgery can help you look younger, more alert and more approachable. Send an email or call one of our convenient offices for a free consultation:

Eyelid Surgery in the Greater Chicago Area

Eyelid surgery calls for incisions along the eyelid crease, in the case of the upper lids. If the lower lids are also involved, incisions may be within the eyelid or just below the eyelashes. After healing, scars are most always nearly or completely undetectable.

During the procedure, the surgeon separates skin from fat and muscle underneath, then removes fat if necessary and excess skin. The incisions are closed with tiny stitches. In some cases, the plastic surgeon may recommend an additional procedure on the forehead and/or eyebrows, as re-positioning some features at the top of the face can affect other features.

Every set of eyes is different, and an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon will tailor eyelid surgery to each individual. Dr. Rios schedules two pre-op consultations with his Joliet, Franfort and Naperville cosmetic surgery patients to be sure all aspects of the procedure have been thoroughly considered and discussed. The two of you will decide whether you need surgery on both your upper and lower eyelids, whether skin and fat will be removed and whether other procedures will be combined with your eyelid surgery.

During your consultations with Dr. Rios, you and he will also discuss how to safeguard your eyes during and after your surgery. You'll need to provide information about your eyesight and bring along any glasses or contact lenses you wear.

After Your Joliet and Naperville Eyelid Surgery

You should suffer only mild discomfort after your procedure; your eye area will probably feel somewhat sore. You may also experience blurry vision from time to time and other effects such as sensitivity to light. Though these conditions can be unsettling, they are completely normal and will subside. Dr. Rios will advise you to take care to keep your eyes moist following surgery to minimize some of these symptoms and protect your corneas. He will have you apply cold compresses regularly for the first two days and use eye drops.

Dr. Rios will provide instructions on cleaning your incisions and washing your face after surgery. He'll advise you about returning to your normal activities and about how you can continue to protect your eyes.

You will experience bruising. Keeping your head elevated and using the compresses will help, but you should still expect bruising around your eyes in the first week, gradually subsiding over the following one to three weeks. You may begin to use makeup gently after the first week.

Risks of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is generally very safe for you and your eyes. Medical conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease can complicate the procedure. And if you have glaucoma or other eye problems such as dry eyes, you may need to check with your eye doctor before proceeding.

If you have questions about whether eyelid surgery is for you, schedule a free consultation with Dr. Rios online today. He will spend as much time as you need to talk over risks and benefits in a no-pressure appointment. Dr. Rios' first priority is the comfort and safety of his patients.

Few patients experience complications or undesirable results following eyelid surgery. If you are generally healthy, you don't smoke, and you follow Dr. Rios' post-op instructions, you will very likely have a smooth recovery period and be delighted with your new wide awake, youthful look.
