Breast Reduction in Joliet and Naperville
Among most other breast procedures, breast reduction, known medically as reduction mammaplasty, is in a class by itself. Unlike breast augmentation and breast lift surgeries, breast reduction addresses physical problems — including medical issues — as well as offering cosmetic improvement.
By relieving both physical and cosmetic distress, breast reduction surgery can literally change a woman's life. People who don't suffer from overly large breasts often don't understand this. But women who have spent their lives binding, concealing or otherwise coping with large, pendulous breasts understand it and long for such a change.

Your Chicago Area Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction is a two- to four-hour long surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. It involves removing breast tissue and skin and repositioning the nipple. For best results, consult a well-trained, board-certified Joliet or Naperville plastic surgeon like Dr. Rios.
At the Rios & Lapinski Plastic Surgery and Dermatologic Institute, Dr. Rios will schedule two consultations with you to ensure your breast reduction procedure delivers the best possible medical and cosmetic outcome. He looks forward to frank and open discussions with you about your body image and your goals. Why not start by scheduling your complimentary appointment online ?
Be prepared for Dr. Rios to take several measurements of your breasts during the consultations and evaluate your tissue type and skin tone. He may also take photographs to use in planning your surgery and for insurance purposes. You and he will then discuss many variables affecting your breast reduction and make plans to transform your breasts, giving them the size, shape and position you've always wanted.
During your surgery, Dr. Rios will make an incision running vertically from the nipple down to the fold and under the breast. He will remove breast tissue, fat and skin and create a new position for the nipple. Then he will reshape your breasts by bringing the remaining skin down around the areola and suturing it together. In your consultations, Dr. Rios will show you where your incisions will be positioned and what areas of skin and tissue will be removed.
Recovering from Breast Reduction
You'll need to plan ahead for a smooth and uneventful recovery period. You can expect to feel some pain following breast reduction for about two days. Dr. Rios will prescribe medication so you'll be prepared for this. You will likely need to take prescription pain medication for just a couple of days, then you can switch to ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Some women report feeling aches and even occasional shooting pain beyond a couple of weeks. This kind of pain subsides over time and is normal.
Your bandages will be removed just a few days after surgery and you'll have no external stitches. You won't require a special bra, in fact you'll wear no bra for the first one to two weeks, then a sports bra.
In all likelihood, you can return to work and light activities in about two weeks. If you tire more quickly than usual for a while, you should know this is typical. You will gradually feel like your energetic self again.
You should also restrict your physical activities for a few weeks following surgery. For the first few days you may not be able to lift your arms over your head, and you won't be able to lift anything heavy for a few weeks. You may also want to prevent anything coming in contact with your breasts for a while except soft fabrics.
Because your body will be undergoing a transformation, you should be ready for an adjustment period following surgery. Even though you will have the normal shape you've dreamed of having, it may take you and your loved ones time to get accustomed to your new look.
Risks of Breast Reduction
For normal, healthy, non-smokers, breast reduction is very safe. It is a surgical procedure involving tissue removal, however, and the possibility (though rare) of complications must be considered. Dr. Rios will discuss these risks with you to make sure you understand and consider them prior to planning your procedure.
Each breast reduction patient from Naperville, Joliet, Frankfort, Aurora or greater Chicago responds to surgery and heals in their own way. In a few cases, unanticipated outcomes can occur that occasionally warrant further surgery. No one can predict with absolute certainty, for example, how a certain scar will look after the healing process is complete.
These are important considerations for you. And they are behind the fact that Dr. Rios plans two consultations with each patient prior to surgery instead of just one. Your safety and comfort with your procedure are paramount.
